Peer Guardian Versus Windows 7 64-Bit

October 1, 2009 | Tech

Wait, there is no fight, not when Peer Guardian runs like a champ in Windows 7 64-Bit. I used Peer Guardian in Windows XP to keep the “pesky” people away. Once I loaded up Windows 7 64-Bit I loaded PG to find that it would not install or load because of driver signing. This article will walk you through the steps necessary to install & enjoy PG on Windows 7.

1 First go grab the new Peer Guardian 2 RC1 Test file.
pg2-rc1-test2.exe

Note: This is not the final version of RC1, it is an initial testing release only but hey it worked great for me.

2 Download Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider aka DSEO.

This free program will override the Windows 7 driver signing process. This is a perfectly safe program, research it if you need assurance.

3 Install DSEO and enable TEST MODE and reboot your computer. Notice the “Test Mode” in the bottom right of your desktop…

4 Once rebooted, you need to install PG2 but DO NOT launch it. Open the PG2 install folder, (C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2), and look for “pgfilter.sys”. This is the unsigned driver that you will sign using DSEO’s sign file option. Type the path for pgfilter.sys which should be (C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\pgfilter.sys), and press OK.

5 Now copy & paste the following code in the run box. In Windows 7 the run box is found via START>ALL PROGRAMS>ACESSORIES>RUN.

bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

6 Your done! Remember you may need to Run As Administrator PG2, just right click on it’s icon in start menu. As always remember to retweet, Digg, Reddit, Stumble or whatever you do if you found this helpful.

Dude, your articles is chopped up! In the middle of step 4 your text ends and there’s no link to the next page or anything… Something went wrong I think…

Thanks for the heads up. Problem was with site backup. At least Google cache helped save some typing.

You are the man. Worked like a charm.

I kept trying to get it to work, I downloaded all the tools but I had already installed and ran PG2 >_<. Anyhoo, I got frustrated and went out and found PeerBlock. Same source code just has a bunch of fixed errors, now it's sucess could have been due to the DSEO that i used earlier to get PG2 to work but this one worked first time everytime! I'm not putting PG2 down I love it! But PeerBlock worked just as well and its built on top of old reliable PG2!

    Not working for me!

When I put C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\pgfilter.sys 7 asks me what to do with it so I told it to always open with PG2.exe.

I AM administrator on my PC, I’ve right clicked on the exe for PG2 but not doing it, I still get that stupid:

    “Class win32_error
    Start service
    577″

    :(

Do we have to remain in test mode all the time?

I just wanted to sign in and tell you THANK YOU very much. I’ve been running Windows 7 since beta builds and given that I’m using 64-bit, I always missed having good ol’ PG2 around. Thank you!

It appears you need to stay in Test Mode. Once I left PG failed to work again. I’m checking out PeerBlock instead…

  9. pg rocks says:

Thank you!!! Works like a charm!!!!

  10. Joe says:

Thank you! It works! The only downside is that you do have stay in test mode in order for PG2 to work.

Sucker DSEO is not downloadable. It is sending to a website to scan the PC. May I know why such stupid thing for DSEO.

Users, beware, this site is found to have many Malwares as I was trying. Someone misguding the PG2 users, here.

  12. Scott says:

    @Brian

Checked it and it works fine. Your the only one who appears to have had a problem. DSEO is not my site anyway so voice your concerns to them if valid.

    @Rhythmeister,

“When I put C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\pgfilter.sys 7 asks me what to do with it so I told it to always open with PG2.exe.”

You don’t put that part in the “run” bar, you re-open DSEO and click to sign an unsigned system file, and put it in there. Hope that helps!

I’ve managed to get the program up and running but it continues to fail when I try to update to the most current lists.

    Any suggestions?

    ~Ben~
